Term 2 Week 4 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
Term 2 is well underway with classes settled and focussed on learning. We hope all Mother’s enjoyed their special day on Sunday. Our thanks go to the team of mother’s and father's who ran the Mother’s Day stall for our students to purchase a wrapped gift. A special shout out to Stacey James who has been leading this team for many years.
Street Parking
Please be aware that parking around the school is being monitored from time to time. I have been made aware that some parents/carers have been fined for parking with their wheels on the nature strip. It is in your interest to be aware of road rules to avoid receiving a fine.
Pedestrian Crossing
You may have noticed new signage has been installed at the crossing on Downard St. We have been notified that the crossing will remain a 24-hour crossing and will not be marked as a school crossing. It is hoped that the new signage will be more successful in alerting drivers to the need to be cautious and look out for pedestrians.
NAPLAN
Years 3 & 5 commence NAPLAN testing today. These standardised tests provide additional information to the assessment data the school maintains. It is the combination of all data collected that provides the most accurate information about a student’s learning progress and growth.
Morning Lines / Unit Entry
We are pleased to again be able to have parent/carers on the school grounds and beginning to engage again in supporting the school. At this stage, parent/carer access to units is still limited and requires you to sign in and out. Only parents engaged in a planned activity such as supporting Home Readers should be entering units. If you would like to see a class teacher please send a request via Seesaw, email or contact the Front Office.
Our morning lines are designed to provide the opportunity for students to begin to settle and focus on school before moving into class. We would appreciate if parent/carers remain beyond the shade shelter where students line up and do not move into or between lines. If your child needs support to move to lines independently, please let your class teacher know and we will happily make arrangements to help facilitate a smooth transition for your child into school in the morning.
Cancelled Events
It is disappointing when excursions or activities such as the disco are unable to go ahead as has been the case recently. We will reschedule these as soon as possible.

Preschool
We have continued to develop a sense of Belonging at preschool with the Magpies and Cockatoos focussing on families. We asked the question: What is a family? and recorded their responses.
We discussed different family traditions and celebrations and were delighted when one of our families provided information on Ramadan and Eid. Their child gave us a very informative talk and confidently answered questions from his peers.
The Rosellas’ begin our morning group time with an Acknowledgment of Country…
Ngunnawal people, Ngunnawal people
Custodians of our land, custodians of our land
We respect and learn from you, we respect and learn from you
The stories you tell, the stories you tell
Care for Country, care for Country
Love our land, love our land
Plants, birds and animals
People of all backgrounds
Hand in hand
Together we stand
Next, we open our group time by teaching one another how to say hello or welcome in many languages. We then share and reflect on our play and projects from our morning investigation time.

Year 1
In Year One, we have been using lots of different concrete materials to assist us in learning across all areas. We used wooden shapes in Maths, different blocks and connecters in Science and Playdoh in Letters and Sounds.
Year 2
In our Inquiry Unit, Year 2 have discussed some Indigenous places and objects of significance and why they are significant. We read the book “Why I Love Australia” by Bronwyn Bancroft and learnt all about the Boab Trees in the Kimberly. These amazing trees can be used for so many things; the leaves can be boiled and eaten like spinach, its is full of moisture and can provide water in the dry times, the inner bark can be used for making nets, rope and baskets, pulp from the seed-pod is high in vitamin C and can be mixed with water for a citrus tasting drink, and it can be used for many other things.
We are very excited for our excursion to Lanyon Homestead!
Year 1
Year 2
Googong
As part of our Inquiry Unit, students in Googong have been learning about significant commerations such as ANZAC day. We were fortunate enough to have one of our parents Megan Fox come and speak to us about soldier Theodore Chamber’s time at war. The students were very interested in hearing the accounts from his letters and what it was like to train and be part of the war.
Bendora
Year 5/6 students have been learning about colonisation and the Gold Rush of the 1850s in Inquiry. They have been enjoying learning through playing the roles of diggers, troopers, bushrangers and other prominent figures, and recreating key moments from history.
