Term 2 Week 6 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
The cooler weather has certainly set in. This is when clothing items get separated from their owners so it’s timely to check that your child’s fleecy top/hoodie and jackets have a name clearly marked.
Years 3 & 5 have finished NAPLAN testing with everything going smoothly. We were fortunate in not experiencing any technical IT issues. Years 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed their excursions to the Lanyon Homestead recently and Kindergarten are looking forward to going to the Zoo this Friday.
Our Years 5 & 6 Ukulele Bands have also enjoyed the opportunity to play with surrounding schools in the past two weeks whilst yesterday a number of our students attended the regional Cross Country Run at Stromlo Forest Park.
Staffing News
Mr Anthony our BSO will be working at Calwell High School for the remainder of the term in a higher duties position. While he is away Peter Rosser will be looking after our school.
Community Engagement Grant
A note is accompanying today’s newsletter seeking your support to help us prepare several walls around the school ready for mural painting, as well as painting background colours on signposts which will have positive messages painted on them and then be placed around the school. We are calling this activity ‘Paint & Pizza’ as we will be providing free pizza to family members who roll up their sleeves to give us a hand between 2.30 – 4.30pm on Wednesday 16 June. Please return the note to assist us in organisation and catering.
Learning Assets
At Calwell we are preparing our students to be successful citizens. One of the key ways in which we are doing this, is through students developing a knowledge and understanding of Learning Assets. Learning Assets assit students to develop a set of skills and dispositions which will support them as learners both in the school and beyond. The 5 Learning Assets support students to become effective self-managers, communicators, collaborators, thinkers and researchers ready to meet the opportunities and challenges they will face in life. Learning Assets are embedded into the school’s academic and social emotional programs with subject content knowledge and Learning Assets taught concurrently.
The Development of Learning Assets:
- involves the use of ‘split screen’ teaching which enables the teacher to help students to understand HOW they are going to learn …. (learning assets/dispositions) and WHAT they are going to learn (the knowledge)
- fosters engagement and curiosity, and facilitates questioning, risk taking, experimenting and making connections. It activates students as owners of their own learning and promotes student agency.
As part of our Community Engagement Grant our next project will be to make short video clips where parents/carers talk about their job. We will be asking participants to highlight which Learning Assets are important to them succeeding in their work. We hope these clips will help our students to see that Learning Assets go well beyond school and will help them in their future endeavours.
2022 Enrolments
We have already received a significant number of preschool enrolments for next year. If you or a friend has a child who turns 4 before the 30th April 2022 please complete the online enrolment as soon as possible.
Lunchtime Clubs
This term students have enjoyed the opportunity to attend a club during lunch time. Each day a club is offered as follows: Monday is craft, Tuesday gardening, Wednesday dance, Thursday is soccer and coding runs on Fridays. Student Parliament will gauge student interest and identify the clubs to run in Term 3.

Kindergarten students have enjoyed learning about the initial sound made by each single letter. We have nearly learnt all 26 single sounds. Here are our Jellyfish for the letter ‘J’.
Corin
Year 1
Year One undertake gross motor activities every Wednesday in the hall. These activities include shooting basketballs, balancing, skipping, sack races, moving on dolly’s, obstacle courses, beanbag throwing and ring toss. The students love engaging in gross motor and it is developing their ability to throw, catch, run, jump and general coordination skills.
Year 2
Last Wednesday Year 2 went on their excursion to Lanyon Homestead to wrap up our Inquiry Unit The Past: The Same but Different. We learnt and experienced what it might have been like to be a child in the 1800s by playing old fashioned games, making paper dolls and exploring the house.
Year 1
Year 2
Googong
Googong students have been researching a celebration of their choice in order to create a brochure. They have used the internet, books and slideshows to collect the information in different categories. Students collated the information and added illustrations to enhance their brochures.
Bendora
Bendora have been investigating significant events or people from the past that helped shape and influence Australia since 1851 – the start of the goldrush era. Students then selected a momentous event such as discovering gold, burning down the Eureka hotel or battles and recreated these in the classroom.
Parliament
Recently, Parliament discussed the popularity of the handball courts and the need for extra ones for students to use. This was approved and new handball will be placed on the blacktop. Students also noticed that the basketball court’s lines had become faded over time. These will also be repainted after being approved by Parliament.
Some students across the school have been creating comics and asked Parliament if these could be placed into the library for students to read. What a great idea! Student-made comics can now be submitted to Mrs Vince before being added to the library.
Looking forward to our family movie night? This event will take place in Week 10. We will be watching the animated movie 'Moonbound', at Limelight cinema in Tuggeranong, which is a family movie for everyone to come along and watch.
Learning Outside Day is always a fun event at Calwell and students from class meetings have asked when this day will happen again. This event has been approved and will take place in Term 4.
Keep reading our school newsletter to stay updated with what has been happening in our school Parliament.
