Term 1 Week 4 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
It is pleasing see how quickly our students have settled into working productively as we head into Week 4 of the term. Class teachers are connecting with parent/carers through phone calls in our ‘virtual’ Meet & Greet.
COVID Update
As we continue to work in the shadow of Covid I would like to thank parents/carers for continuing to support the Covid safe practices that we have in place. Whilst we are having to communicate some exposures in the school, these are having a minor impact on teaching and learning, largely due to families keeping children home when they are displaying any symptoms and using the RAT kits which we are distributing.
PLEASE, PLEASE do not arrive at the school until just after 3pm to collect your child/children. We are receiving complaints about cars waiting outside the gate and disrupting the flow of traffic.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the great team of staff in the school who continue to go the extra mile while we remain working in an environment that requires them to wear masks, take on extra duties such as pickup and drop-off and send notifications even over the weekend. Thank you also to those members of the community who have taken the time to thank or acknowledge the effort staff are putting into keeping our students safe and at school. Appreciation goes a long way!
Book packs
Thank you also to the families who have already purchased book packs which include the key resources for our students to engage in the educational program. We understand that at this time of year payment requests for a range of things places stress on the family budget. The school is always happy to work with families to develop payment plans, arrange part payment or provide support when requested.
PBL Classroom Expectations
Positive behaviours for Learning continues as a strong presence in the school. Each class has worked collaboratively with their teacher to develop class PBL expectations in addition to the Universal Expectations of being a Safe, Respectful, Learner and the expectations outlined on signs in various key areas around the school such as the hall and playground areas. We know from research that children who receive a consistent message through a strong home/school partnership achieve the most successful outcomes. We encourage you to talk to your child about our PBL expectations - you may even like to create a similar matrix of positive behaviour expectations at home.

Preschool
It has been lovely to see friendships developing over the past few weeks as the children have settled into attending prechool, connecting and building relationships through shared interests. Developin positive social skills such as sharing, taking turns, cooperating, listening, communicating, showing empathy and consideration of others are important skills for our youngsters to master. Building positive relationships with others strengthens social and emotional wellbeing.
Scrivener
In Kindergarten we have been exploring where we see numbers in our environment. For example on a clock, number plate, road signs and at the shops. Students were given the task to go on a number hunt around the junior playground. Here are some students recording the numbers they found.
Corin
This week in 1/2 we have been learning about how numbers can be represented in different ways. This included numerals, words, tally marks, on ten frames, hundreds charts and on number lines. The students had a great time practising drawing their number lines with chalk outside.
Googong
We have been learning about collaboration through a range of shared activities which have engaged the year 3/4 students. Groups worked together to solve problems, discuss ideas and practise the skills that has been taught. The activities students enjoyed included Trading Game, Flip It! and Bull Cow Miss/number wordle.
Bendora
This week in Bendora, students have begun learning about persuasive writing and using strong evidence to support their arguments. To give their learning a real-world application, students are beginning to draft letters to Mrs Neeson on ways they believe our school could be improved.
In Visual Art, students have been learning about complimentary and analogous colours as they take inspiration from Sandra Silberzweig’s abstract portraits.
