Term 4 Week 6 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
Newsletter
Today’s school newsletter is coming to you in a new format. We hope that you will enjoy the range of information and photos that will be included. The newsletter is presented in sections, with some regular sections such as my message, student awards and news from each teaching unit in every newsletter; as well as sections which will appear from time to time, such as news from the School Board and Student Parliament following their meetings. While there will be some repeated information or photos that currently appear on our Facebook site, we are aware that Facebook is not a medium everyone chooses to utilise. We have launched this new newsletter format at this time to enable us to develop it over the last few weeks of 2020 with a view to regularly being able to present an engaging and informative newsletter in 2021. As we would like the school newsletter to serve the school community as well as possible, please feel free to send any comments or feedback to contact@calwellps.act.edu.au
School Activities
Today we encouraged students to come dressed in their sport attire and get into the spirit of State of Origin. We hope that in these final weeks of what has been a challenging year that our students will have the opportunity to celebrate their success and have some fun. Movie day is scheduled, and class teachers are planning different activities for their class in the last week or two. Regrettably, this year we will not be holding an end of year concert. This decision had to be made some time ago and with the uncertainty of COVID restrictions the staff elected not to prepare items that potentially could not be shared. We look forward to doing some alternative performances next year. Due to current restrictions some of are usual end of year events will look a little different, for example the preschool celebration party and Year 6 Graduation events. More detail will be sent to the families involved.
2021
Please let us know as soon as possible if your child/ren will not be returning to Calwell next year as we are already making plans for classes. Any requests for class placement should be made in writing to contact@calwellps.act.edu.au Please be aware that when class are formed and announced we are not able to move students. We welcome any information you feel would assist us in making the best class placement for your child. Students will also be asked to provide the names of students they would like to have in their class. Our goal is to ensure that every child has one from their list, hopefully more.
End of Year Reports
Reports will be sent home on Tuesday 15 December via email. Please ensure that the school has the correct email address/s. If you are uncertain of the contact details we have in relation to parent/carers who are to receive a copy of a report, please contact the office on 61421900 as soon as possible.

Preschool
This term our Preschool children are investigating life cycles and living things. Each week the classes have been observing the growth and change of tadpoles and recording their observations through drawings. We can’t wait to see how the tadpoles grow!
Scrivener
In Kindergarten we love reading and writing! This year we have learnt lots about sounds and letters and we recognise many of the Magic 100 Words. We have our own book boxes for reading and we use whiteboards to practise our writing and to make sure we are forming letters correctly.
Corin
This term in Technology we are designing and coding a short presentation using the platform ‘Scratch Jr’. Students work with a partner to record their ideas and designs using labelled drawings, lists and sequenced instructions.
Googong
Last week in 3/4 we used Seesaw to learn more about NAIDOC Week and its theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be.’. Students discussed that the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be.’ recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. Their history predates well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge.
Students also learnt about the Indigenous calendar and wrote a recount of the story ‘Tiddalick the Frog’. We encourage you to have a look at your child’s recount and a NAIDOC acrostic poem through the Seesaw App.
Bendora
This term 5/6 students are participating in a program called ‘Passports to Success’ which is delivered by the Smith Family. The program runs over 6 weeks and supports students in learning how to set life goals, as well as helping our year 6 students to prepare for their transition to high school.
Student Parliament
K-6 students have been enjoying the new equipment purchased for break time Sports Borrowing. This equipment was purchased using the money we have raised through Hot Food and Frozen Fridays.
Don’t forget to bring in your bread tags into the front office in support of ‘Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs’. This charity recycles plastic breads tags locally, raising funds to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people in South Africa.
Communities@Work Christmas Appeal
Once again, we will have a giving tree in the front office to help those in our area over Christmas.
If you would like to participate, you can donate non-perishable food items as well as unwrapped new toys or gifts.
Our giving tree will run from the 23rd November to the 7th December.
