Term 2 Week 4 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
Pupil Free Days
Please note in your diary that Wednesday 25 May and Friday 24 June 2022 will be pupil free staff planning days. Where possible, we ask that students do not attend school on these days. Students who can’t stay at home will be supervised at school while undertaking general learning activities. To assist us in planning, please email contact@calwellps.act.edu.au OR complete the note which will be sent home with your child/ren tomorrow to notify us if your child/ren WILL be attending school on one or both days.
Changed Arrangements
As outlined in an email to families last week, as of this week parent/carers are able to come into the school grounds and make appointments to meet with teachers face to face. While parent/carers can come on to school ground the line-up area and the unit buildings and surround are student and staff areas only. As staff are no longer managing pick-up at the end of the day, we ask parent/carers to drive cautiously in the car park and be patient as everyone adjusts to the changed arrangements.
COVID
COVID continues to impact us all. We fully appreciate the difficulties families experience when children are not able to attend school, however, it is vital that as a school community we work together to minimise the possible transmission COVID at school as this is the best way to support teachers and students remaining well and maintaining school routines and programs. It is essential that the school be notified your child or anyone in the household tests positive to COVID. We have been advised by the Education Directorate today that children under 12yrs should isolate if they are household contacts. We are aware that this is in conflict with information from ACT Health currently in the public domain, however, we expect to receive formal up-dated notification to pass onto families regarding this soon. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate the changes and uncertainties.
Volunteers
Parent/carer or other volunteers are a very important resource in schools. The pandemic has had a significant impact on people being able to come into schools, but we are pleased that we can now slowly bring volunteers back into the school. As you may appreciate, due to recent restrictions and monitoring in schools, this area that has been reviewed and a new procedure for bringing volunteers into schools has been developed by the Education Directorate. Volunteers who visit the school regularly require a Working with Vulnerable People Card and all volunteers are required to be aware of the Code of Conduct Guidelines, confidentially, and be aware of reportable matters. Initially we will approach volunteers who previously regularly worked in the school to return. Class teachers will then seek additional volunteers as the program settles. A Volunteer Pack will be given to everyone coming into the school to help.
X-Country
After a few cancelled dates we were finally able to hold the X-County run yesterday. Thank you to the parent/carers who were able to attend. It certainly was X-country including hills. Congratulations to all our students who took on the challenge. A group of our students will now go onto the regional X-Country run to represent our school on 24 May.

Scrivener
This week in Kindergarten students listened to the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. This story was a great way for students to make connections between counting on and the days of the week. Here are some of our wonderful caterpillars that students created. We hope you like them!
Corin
In Maths we have been learning about capacity. We measured and recorded how many cups of sand or water different containers could hold. We began to discuss which containers hold more and which containers hold the least and why.
Googong
In term one we worked really hard on our addition and subtraction. The students are now putting these skills to use in our unit on money. The students are representing amounts of money in different ways and calculating change from transactions.

Students in Year 5 have been learning how to use apostrophes of possession accurately, particularly when the noun is a plural. First, they needed to identify whether the noun was singular or plural, then re-write the sentence to show both forms with the correct placement of the apostrophe.
Year 6 have been working diligently on their Rostrum speeches and writing a narrative which will soon be converted into a story book using Book Creator for all to enjoy. The photos below show Year 6 working hard on their art project.
