Term 2 Week 8 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
Winter is certainly here. The playground is not very inviting with the cold winds coming off the snow topped mountains. To make matters worse we experienced some problems with the heating system last week, however I’m pleased to report that after several attempts things have been resolved and all units are now comfortably warm.
We are still hearing of a number of families being affected by Covid as well as a nasty flu. We are continuing to be able to cover all staff absences and have avoided needing to split classes or move to supervision only. Please monitor your children carefully for symptoms of sickness. We do greatly appreciate our students being kept at home when unwell as this is an important strategy in keeping learning programs and the school operational. Please contact the front office on 61421900 if you require additional Rapid Antigen Tests.

Assemblies
It has been a real pleasure to welcome family members back into the school for assemblies. We are holding junior and senior assemblies to minimise cross over between unit groups. Family members intending to come to an assembly should register via the following link a couple of days before their child’s assembly is scheduled. Please note the final assembly for the term hosted by Yr 6 will be held on Thursday 30th June at 2.30pm and NOT Friday.

School Camps
School camps are something many students look forward to attending. As you may be aware over the years we have held a Yr 3/4 and a Yr 5/6 camp each year. This means families are budgeting to send one and sometimes more children to camp each year. Most high schools also have a year 7 camp. With the increase in the cost of camps and household expenses we have decided to survey the school community to gather information about how valuable you feel the camp experience is for your child/ren and how many camp experiences you feel should be made available and are affordable for families. Please go to the following link to complete the survey:

Preschool
This term preschool children have been busy exploring the big question 'How can we be fair, responsible and respectful'?
Through picture books we have been learning about fair and unfair. During play we have been working together to think about what is fair and consider how our friends might be feeling and how we respond to each other. Through stories, puppets, class discussions and play we have been talking about how to join play, wait and take a turn.
The Rosellas have been enjoying the ‘Pig the Pug’ series by Aaron Blabey, delighting in Pig’s outrageous behaviour and considering how Pig could be a more respectful friend to Trevor.
Our learning about fairness has led us to thinking about how we each do our fair share. Some of the ways we are responsible at preschool are helping to pack up, managing our personal belongings and caring for preschool resources.
The Magpies and Cockatoos have been developing their numeracy skills through games, construction and engaging in educational learning on the plasma screen. They have been exploring number, measurement, position and shape. By providing numeracy concepts and skills in different forms, the learning experiences are differentiated to meet the children's various learning styles.
Scrivener
This term in Kindergarten we have been using a variety of manipulatives to represent the numbers we have been learning.
We have loved using resources such as: dominoes, paddle pop sticks, ten frames, number lines, Unifix cubes and Numicon shapes.
This is helping to build our mental computation skills including counting on, counting back and 1:1 correspondence.
Corin
Years 1 and 2 have been learning the reading strategy Adjusting Reading Rate. We have been exploring when we should read slowly or more quickly and how to read expressively using the punctuation.
Googong
This term students have been working hard on their persuasive texts. They have chosen a question or topic and created a piece of writing that argues their point of view. As with any writing task, they have edited it to create a polished piece. Some of the writing topics included - dogs are better than cats, PS is better than Xbox and why it is important to colour in the lines.
Bendora
As part of our Geography work, Year 6 have been exploring different countries in Europe. Each week students are presented with a clue about a particular country in Europe which they use to help identify which country we will investigate. After making their predictions, we locate the country on a world map and begin exploring interesting facts about that country.
Students have also enjoyed Readers Workshop, working as part of a small group to support their reading skills and exploring sound and letter relationships by investigating different patterns that exist in spelling complex words.
Year 6 were very excited to attend the Soccer Clinic this week, and their enthusiasm crossed over into class sport time where we have been playing soccer while overlooking the snow-capped mountains.
Camp Australia Holiday Program
SUPA Holiday
Families of students who attend the Christian SUPA Club at school may be interested in this holiday program on 5 & 6 July. Our regular relief teacher, Cliff Armitage will be working as one of the leaders.
