Term 3 Week 2 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
Welcome to term 3. It was lovely to see our students return last week and we are looking forward to a busy term ahead.
As you are aware covid-19 continues to circulate in our community and impact teachers, students and families. Yesterday you would have received communication about the postponement of upcoming events this week (athletics carnival, assembly and 101 days of kindergarten). We are working to reschedule these events as soon as possible and will advertise new dates when they become available. Please ensure you continue to notify the school if your child tests positive to covid and or is a household contact.
Pupil Free Days
All ACT public schools are holding two staff planning days this term on Friday 5 August (week 3) and Friday 9 September (week 8). Where possible students should not attend school on these days. Students who are not able to stay at home will be able to attend school for supervision.
Please confirm ASAP via phone on 6142 1900 (during business hours) or via email contact@calwellps.act.edu.au if your child/ren need to attend school on these days.
Footsteps
This term all k-6 students will participate in the Footsteps Dance program. Each year we offer this program as part of our Arts curriculum. Our end of year reports will include several dance outcomes that directly relate to engagement in this program. As this program directly relates to the curriculum, we expect all children will participate. Please contact me if you require financial support for your child/ren to participate or would like to discuss your child/ren’s participation. If you haven’t yet returned your child/ren’s note and payment please do so as soon as possible. The program is due to commence on Monday 8 August.
Planning for 2023
It’s hard to believe that we are already planning for 2023. To ensure we have an accurate snapshot of our enrolments families who are not returning to Calwell in 2023 are asked to notify the school via this link https://forms.gle/SCEPqaBRMtrnuBfK8
Assemblies
Due to the ongoing covid risk we will continue to have assemblies in junior and senior groups. We are required to continue to have assemblies as ticked events. Outlined below is the schedule of hosting classes. We encourage families only to attend when your child/ren’s class is hosting. To register your attendance please book in using this link https://forms.gle/ghsgsxQPrku8WFod9

Scrivener
In Kindergarten we’ve been learning about how to write a recount. Using our ‘think, draw, write’ strategy we created pictures on a camera film to highlight four of our favourite holiday activities. After completing our drawings, we wrote sentences to describe our pictures! Here are some examples from KP and KH about what they did these holidays.
Corin
For the Inquiry Unit ‘Our Local Area’ year 1 and 2 students have been looking at natural, constructed and managed features in environments. This week we focused on constructed features, such as bridges, tunnels, roads, towers, skyscrapers, cars and traffic lights. Students were given the opportunity to create these features using materials around the classroom.
Googong
This week the 3/4's started looking at measurement. We talked about the units we use when measuring different things such as weight, volume, distance and height. We started by focusing on length. In groups they created a property to specified measurements, using a variety of materials.
Bendora
In Year 5 and 6, students have been learning how to use classify, measure and draw angles. They have found examples of angles in the classroom, used both real and digital protractors and examined angles within artwork.
Parliament
Our Semester 1 parliament Representatives have done a fabulous job of holding class meetings and taking ideas to improve our school to the school Parliament. Well done!
