Term 3 Week 4 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
Week 4 of Term 3 already! There is lots going on in the school and for the moment it seems that the incidence of Covid cases in the school community is slowing, but please continue to notify the school if your child tests positive or is a household contact. Thank you for supporting last Fridays’ Pupil Free Day. Staff were able to use the day to plan for Book Week and worked collaboratively to work on reading and writing strategies and the literacy teaching approaches used across the school.
Week 4 Activities
It is a busy week as we catch up on a number of the activities that were postponed. The school is full of black and white spotted dogs today as Kindergarten celebrate their first 100 days of schooling with a 101 Dalmatian Theme. Be sure to check our Facebook page for some great photos. Kinders will also be hosting this week’s assembly and we have the Athletics Carnival on Thursday!
Planning for 2023
Thank you to those families who have already communicated with us if your child/children will not be returning to Calwell in 2023. Schools are starting the staffing process for next year this week. Being confident about our enrolment numbers in each year cohort enables us to plan more effectively. Please notify us via this link: https://forms.gle/SCEPqaBRMtrnuBfK8
Messages for Students
If you are needing to collect your child from school early, please notify your child’s class teacher and/or the front office at the start of the day. Office staff may not be able to contact a teacher and student if a request for a student to leave early is received after 2.15pm. Your support in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Staffing
I would like to thank Katie Brown for acting as principal from the start of the term during my absence. As you may be aware I was to be overseas until week 7, unfortunately my husband had a flair up of a back condition and was unable to travel resulting in me cancelling my Long Service leave. Life does seem to throw up curve balls at the most unexpected times!

This term we have started learning about numbers that come before and after e.g. 3 is before 4 and 5 is after 4. To help us deepen our knowledge and understanding we have been using manipulatives such as numicon, dice, unifix cubes and number lines. We enjoyed getting to be a part of a number line by holding up number signs in the correct order.

Years One and Two have been learning about the different types of features in our environment – natural, constructed and managed. To help understand the concept of managed features, the students planted grassheads and will now ‘manage’ the plants by making sure they get sun, water and are in from the cold at night. We hope that eventually we might even be able to manage the grassheads by giving them haircuts!

3/4 have been extremely busy developing their skills as thinkers, researchers and communicators this term. In inquiry we have been researching countries that neighbour Australia and investigating their landscape and climate. We also created trioramas to show what we learnt about a chosen city or country. In maths, we have continued to experiment with measurement using different units, both formal and informal. 3/4B have been busy writing letters to Year 2 students at another school and they have loved learning about their new pen pals through this different form of communication. The 3/4 students are also excited because in Science they have been learning about plants and how they grow and have just planted some seeds.

In Year 5 this fortnight, we have been delving deeper into the Learning Assets, with Collaborator and Communicator as our focus. The students worked through a series of team challenges which required all members to work together effectively to be successful.
‘Being a collaborator means working together, sharing ideas and not just listening to your own.’ – Aeman
‘I’ve learnt that for the most part, when I’m not under stress, I work well in a team’ – Levi
‘I enjoy being the leader and taking on the hard role’ – Jacob
‘My team collaborated well with the cup stacking challenge because we talked each other through it.’ – Arjun
‘Even if you don’t really know the people in your group, you can still compromise, take turns and make turns for each other.’ -Brodey
‘I don’t like being the leader of a team, but I can follow my team’s ideas and I don’t get frustrated.’ -Isobel
In Year 6 we are learning about angles, their properties and how to calculate supplementary and complimentary angles. We then incorporated angles into our artwork whereby, students had to create various angles using tape, create an artistic design and finally, measure and label the angles on the back of the artwork.
