Term 3 Week 6 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
Athletics Carnivals
We finally managed to complete our Calwell Athletics Carnival last week, albeit after waiting for the fog to lift. Thank you to the family members who joined us, students and staff value and enjoy community involvement. Hopefully next year we can again hold a full school event at the Calwell Ovals in fine weather!
Despite the awful weather an attempt was made to hold the Tuggeranong Regional carnival today. Thank you to the families who supported their child/ren to attend, some of whom completed their event in the rain and other whose event will now be held on 31 August @ Woden Athletics Park starting at 9.30am when the carnival will recommence the schedule. The decision to hold events today was out of our control. Thank you to Mr Susko and Mr Glover for supporting our students.
Book Week
This week we are celebrating Book Week. The school was filled with so many book characters today and our classes have been enjoying the mystery readers who are reading a book each day. Be sure to look at the school Facebook page to see photos of some pretty amazing costumes. It’s great to see that family members have joined together and used their skills to fashion some very creative outfits. Our annual Scholastic Book Fair is set up in the hall. This is a great opportunity to see some of the beautiful new books available and purchase something for Christmas or a birthday while also supporting the school. Details of the time the stall is elsewhere in this newsletter.
Fathers Day Stall
Next week our students will be able to purchase something special for Dad. Class groups will visit the stall and be able to select a gift wrapped item. Many thanks to Brook Trotter for taking responsibility for this event, purchasing and wrapping most of the items and gathering other support.
Assemblies
It has been a real joy to attend our school assemblies over the past few weeks. We have so many talented students and creative teachers. There have been songs, dances, art displays and wonderful examples of sharing the learning taking place across the school. I hope family members have enjoyed the assemblies as much as me. We are all looking forward to when the whole school can again be together to showcase and celebrate the learning and successes of our students.

Preschool
This term preschool is focussing on building a strong sense of wellbeing. We’ve been discussing emotions and are engaging children in experiences, conversations and routines that promote healthy lifestyles and good nutrition.
To illustrate how we can keep out body healthy, we drew around a child to get a body outline. We then played “pass the parcel (bag)” and when the music stopped the child selected an item from the bag. We named and talked about each item (e.g. toothpaste cleans our teeth), then placed it on the body outline.
The children were able to identify different emotions and using a variety of resources to make different faces. This facilitated discussion between peers about how they could represent an emotion and what it meant.

In Kindergarten we have been building our knowledge and understanding around simple addition. We have been exploring what addition is (to join together) and then solving different examples to 10 using a variety of manipulatives. We have learnt different terminology such as:
– these 3 blue cubes PLUS these 2 red cubes EQUALS 5
– when I ADD the 4 students with brown hair and the 3 students with black hair I get a SUM of 7
– I am noticing as I ADD and put things TOGETHER, I am always getting MORE

As our Unit of Inquiry finishes, Year 2 was able to cut their grass heads! This has been an ongoing project where students planted grass seeds and have been managing their growth by watering them regularly and putting them out in the sun. They were amazed at how much their grass heads had grown.
Googong
The students in 3/4 have been finishing their information reports. First they chose what they wanted to research, then they used their research skills to find information in books and on the Internet. Once done, they sorted their information under subheadings. Finally they turned their dot points into sentences using their own words.

In Year 5, students have been learning about prisms and pyramids. They then used this new knowledge to plan the construction of a composite shape – some were very extravagant! When it came time to build these shapes using skewers and modelling clay, many discovered that sometimes the best-laid plans don’t always go the way you intended and simplified their construction. What began as a maths lesson quickly evolved into a lesson in perseverance and flexibility.
In Year 6, we have been doing Footsteps. Here the students have been learning a variety of new dance moves while maintaining rhythm. In Math, the students have been collecting and displaying data using bar graphs, using correct labels and spacing.
