Term 4 Week 8 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
It’s hard to believe we have just over two weeks before the end of the 2020 school year! The remainder of the year is very busy as we finalise the reporting process, prepare classes for 2021 and create hand-over documentation for teachers; there’s packing resources away, end of year activities and some moving of furniture as we gear up for an additional class in 2021.
2021 Class Placement Requests
This is the last opportunity for parents/carers to communicate any information or requests you feel will assist us in forming class groups for next year. ALL requests must be in writing to contact@calwellps.act.edu.au Please be aware that students will not be moved once classes are announced on the first day of school next year.
Class Profile Meetings
Next week, the Team Leaders and I will be meeting with every class teacher to discuss the students in their class. At these profile meetings we review the progress every student has made during the year and identify students who may need additional support or extension next year. During the meeting we also discuss student well-being. These are very valuable meetings which supports teachers and the leadership team to share information that will enable us to work productively together to meet the needs of all students.
End of Year Reports
Semester 2 Reports will be sent home via email on Tuesday 15 December. In the event that you do not receive your child/ren’s reports please contact the school on 61421900 on Wednesday morning.
Building Work
In preparation for next year a disability toilet is being built at the rear of the Corrin Unit. The work area is fenced off and students will be asked not to be in this area. Unfortunately, the bike rack will not be available for use during this time. Students who are intending to ride to school between now and the end of the year should talk with their class teacher about where their bike can be stored during the day.

Preschool
Our veggie garden is growing!
The frequent rains and warmer weather have worked their magic on the seeds we have planted in Term 3. We already have a few peas and strawberries and we can’t wait for the other plants to bear fruit, too. We also enjoy finding some crawly friends such as slaters and worms.
Scrivener
In Kindergarten we are learning about procedural texts. Students have been learning about the importance of making sure our instruction steps are in order. This week we have been busy looking at different instructions including how to pack our school bag and how to brush our teeth.

Year 1
In Year One we are beginning to describe the features of Australian coins. E.g. animal, size, shape and colour of 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins. Here we are using a Paull Swan resource to help us identify different ways we can name the coins.
Year 2
This term in Mathematics we are learning about capacity. The capacity of an object is how much it will hold. Students worked in partners and groups to compare the capacity of a range of containers using informal units. We ordered these containers and used the language greatest capacity and least capacity to describe them.

Year 2
Googong
3/4 have been learning how to write poetry. Using the 5 senses - taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing to create a stronger image in the reader’s mind. Students had the opportunity to sit in the outdoor environment to inspire their writing. Topics they explored included emotions, seasons, nature and favourite food.
Bendora
As part of our literacy program, 5/6 take part in Cooperative Reading sessions 3 times a week. In groups, they read a shared text, complete a comprehension activity and discuss the text. Over time students take on one of the reading roles (Investigator, Code Breaker, Illustrator or Discussion Manager) which help make meaning from the text. During the discussion, these reading roles are combined, with each student sharing their knowledge and ideas through their role to build everyone’s understanding of the text. When a book is finished, the group creates a poster that summarises and reviews the text.
Student Parliament
This week the school came together to vote on their new Parliament representatives for 2021. The students who had been selected to present their speeches to the school were nervous but excited. They each took turns to explain to the school why they should be chosen as the Parliament leaders for 2021 and how they would support and promote the support the school next year. After speeches students in years 1 to 5 voted for the candidate they believed would make the best Student Parliament leader in 2021. The successful students will be announced at the Leadership Assembly on Friday 11th December.
