Term 4 Week 2 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are in the final term for 2022. We have had a great start to term 4 with a very colourful Crazy Sock Day last Wednesday and our first mixed age group STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) Rotation on Friday afternoon. The staff and students are looking forward to these rotations continuing fortnightly over the term.
Preschool Open day
It was lovely to have so many preschool family members visiting yesterday. The children were excited to share their learning and showcase their classrooms.
Stay & Play
We have planned two Stay & Play afternoons this term, the first being this Thursday 20th October. This is a great opportunity for our students and families to get together after school to engage in games together. Please bring some afternoon tea for your family. Should it rain, the event will be cancelled. Notification will be made by SMS at midday.
Pupil Free Day
Next Friday 28th October is a pupil free day. Please notify the front office if your child/ren will be attending school so we are able to arrange adequate supervision.
Reporting
This term class teachers will be preparing end of year reports. In keeping with the Education Directorate’s workload reduction strategies student academic reports in Semester 2 2022 will include an overall A to E grade and an assessment of Achievements Standards. Reports will not include teacher comments. Our teachers will continue communicating directly with families about student learning and we invite you to contact your child’s class teacher in the next few weeks if you have any questions about your child’s progress.

Thank you to the families who have already notified us if students will not be returning to Calwell PS next year. In Mathematics our Kindergarten students have been exploring the language used to describe the length of different objects e.g. longer, shorter, taller, smaller and bigger. We used informal objects such as paper clips, beads, cotton tips and unifix cubes to measure and compare different lengths. To connect our learning to real-life experiences, students enjoyed being able to measure the length of different construction tools and “dinosaur bones” we found in the sandpit!

Year One and Two have started exploring data and graphs this week. We considered different types of data and made a column graph with paper, pencils and textas. Then the students explored using different software to make their graphs on their chromebooks. They enjoyed exploring the different graphs they could choose to represent their data and developed their problem solving skills when it didn’t quite match the vision in their head! We then compared the benefits and disadvantages of drawing and using software to create graphs. Students examined their finished graphs to interpret the data, discovering which option had the most, which had the least, how many more.
Googong
In 3/4 we have been busy coding in 'scratch'. In 3/4D we are currently learning how to make a ‘flappy bird’ game. In these pictures you can see the students showing off what they have learned so far to 3/4C.
Bendora
Year 5 students have been carefully studying their own faces as they create digital portraits. They have discovered how creating shadows, highlighting certain areas and layering more detailed parts of the face builds depth and dimension, and brings their artwork to life.
Our class has also begun reading the new class novel, Freak the Mighty, and learning the socratic discussion method, building on the power of asking open-ended questions. Students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others.
Year 6 have been learning new songs in band and are getting better every week. In Mathematics students have been learning how to multiply whole numbers by fractions. In English year 6 have been looking at myths and legends.
