Term 4 Week 8 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
We are looking forward to celebrating the end of the year with our community this Thursday at 5:30pm on the lower oval / blacktop area. Families are invited to bring your own picnic or pre-order a sausage sandwich and drink. We have several activities planned for the evening and students will showcase some favourite dances from the year in cohort groups for your enjoyment. Hopefully the weather will hold out for the evening. If not, an SMS will be sent on the day advising of any changes.
Over the coming 2 weeks I will be acting principal as Linda is taking leave returning on Monday 12 December. Lauren Lutton will be taking on the role of acting executive teacher during this time. Congratulations Lauren on your acting position.
Staff have been busy preparing end of year academic reports. These will be emailed to families
(k-6) on Thursday 8 December and preschool will receive their paper copy on Thursday 8th or Monday 12th. Please contact the front office if you would like to arrange a meeting with your child/ren’s teacher before the end of the school year to talk about their academic progress.
As we continue to work on class placements for 2023 families as asked to notify the front office or complete the following form if your child/ren will not be returning to Calwell in 2023 https://forms.gle/z84SymvtEthb5GzE6. Student enrolment numbers for 2023 continue to fluctuate and having accurate information will allow us to ensure we determine the best possible class combination and placements for 2023.
The last couple of weeks of this term are shaping up to be busy with lots of events on. Several notes have been sent home recently including movie day excursion, 2023 year 6 t-shirts and graduation / disco information for year 6. Please contact the front office if you have misplaced your note or require financial support for payment.
As the weather warms up (hopefully) please ensure your child/ren brings a water bottle each day and wears layers in the cooler mornings. We also encourage you to check in with your child/ren every now and then about their lunch and recess to see if enough food is being provided. Many children approach the front office each day requesting more food which is provided upon request. Classes have a fruit break followed by lunch and recess each day.
Planning for activities and events for 2023 are well underway. We are excited that school camps will resume in 2023 as well as local excursions and incursions. We hope that the majority of covid restrictions are behind us and that we can resume more whole events and activities in 2023 including regular whole school assemblies. Families are reminded to keep children home if they are unwell and if your child tests positive to covid you are required to let the school know.
This year we have connected with One Box (weekly food boxes) and the Smith Family (financial and family support). We understand that the cost of living is increasing and that some families may be struggling. Please reach out to me if you are in this position and I can assist you to connect with services that may be able to help your family.
I look forward to seeing you on Thursday evening.
Kind regards
Katie Brown

As part of our Inquiry Unit students have been using ‘Beebots’. Beebots are an exciting programmable floor robot that teach basic control, directional language and coding to students. They programmed their robots to move forwards, backwards and left to right on a special Beebot course. Students used the learning asset ‘collaboration’ to work together using trial and error to achieve their goal.

Year One and Two have had a wonderful time experimenting with coding the Beebots around their island! They had to start at the wharf and code the Beebot to reach the treasure. The students really enjoyed this and didn’t even notice that they were developing their problem solving skills, their ability to collaborate and their ability to communicate clearly!
Googong
Students have been working on editing, illustrating and using their best handwriting to create posters in English and Mathematics. They have worked hard and demonstrated grit and resilience throughout the editing process.
Bendora
Year 5 students have been sharpening up their ruler and protractor skills by experimenting with parabolic art. First they reviewed the classification of triangles before carefully drawing a large equilateral triangle. By accurately measuring and marking equidistant spaces, they created mirror-symmetrical curves using only perfectly straight lines. There are so many variations of this beautiful artform we will continue to explore over the next week.
In Year 6 math we have been multiplying muti-digit decimals numbers. In Art we have been designing and making lanterns which are inspired by Japanese artworks.
