Term 4 Week 10 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Families,
We are at the end of another busy and challenging year. I would like to congratulate all Calwell students on their learning growth and achievements this year and thank the wonderful Team Calwell staff who have worked to provide our students with engaging and challenging learning. While the impact of Covid was still present in the school and broader community, it has been pleasing for us to begin to return school routines and activities to pre pandemic days. We are all looking forward to 2023 being the year where there is much more community engagement with the school.
My sincerest thanks goes to the great team of teachers and administrative staff who always have the welfare and needs of our students and families front and centre. Thank you all for your hard work throughout the year, your willingness to go the extra mile and for helping the school and its students to achieve success.
Our School Board parent and community representatives have continued to be a strong support to the school through another challenging year, and I would like to thank them for their continued commitment to, and support of the school. The work of the parent Board members and a small group of other interested parents/carers will see the Calwell Primary Community Association become active at the start of 2023.
While COVID again impacted on the ability of members of the school community to volunteer we thank the volunteers who have continued to help when possible or called upon. The support from within our community is greatly appreciated and valued.
Farewells
It’s the time of year where we say farewell to some staff. Staff changes occur for variety of reasons including end of placement at Calwell and seeking a career opportunities:
Lisa Jenkins – is moving to work in the private sector, as a stepping stone back to her hometown of Adelaide.
Lauren Uhr – has worked as a class teacher and learning support teacher in the school this year and is moving to Farrer Primary to further her experience in the primary sector.
Emily Hardy, Elise Paull & Tamara Hope – were all appointed to Calwell after graduating to become teachers. They are looking forward to taking up their next appointments at Fadden and Gordon as they further the teaching careers. Cintha Thompson is also moving to her next appointment at Forrest Primary. These teachers have all made a valuable contribution to the school over the past few years and will missed.

Kinder children and parents will meet with the leadership team for a brief welcome prior to the children moving into the Scrivener unit. Children new to the school or returning to Calwell in years 1-6 will begin on Tuesday 31st January. Students should line up on the blacktop in their 2022 class groups as they will be starting the day in these groups to give them an opportunity to catch up with their classmates and teacher where possible. 2023 classes will be formed during the morning. New classes will commence after lunch.
On behalf of all the staff I wish you a safe and joyful festive season. I hope that families have the opportunity to spend some quality time together. Here’s hoping 2023 brings stability!

Scrivener
In literacy we have been revising recounts and participating in different experiences at school by learning new co-operative games such as; rob the nest, stuck in the mud, over and under, duck, duck goose and red rover. After participating in these activities students have written about their experiences using the structure of who, what, where and when. This activity is aimed at building writing confidence and stamina.
Corin
Year 1 and 2 have had a wonderful year and are very excited for next year. Last week we wrote letters to our future teachers. We learnt about the elements of a letter such as the date, a greeting, the body, a closing and a signature. We thought carefully about the things we want our teachers to know and other interesting facts about ourselves.
Googong
In Mathematics our focus is area. 3/4 students have worked diligently to calculate the area of their projects. These projects included; a zoo, farm and self-portraits. Everyone had a lot of fun creating and designing their ideas.
Bendora
Year 5 students have been analysing different forms of poetry focusing on the use of poetic devices and understand rhythm and rhyme patterns. They researched the life and works of Banjo Paterson, then unpacked the meaning and structure of ‘The Man From Ironbark’, before reciting it in groups.
Year 6 have been exploring various art styles and have been working hard in their last few weeks of year 6.
