Term 2 Week 2 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Community,
What a great start to the term we have had at Calwell! Students have settled back into the school routine, and all had their smiles ready for school photos today. Thank you to our community for your support of our athletics carnival last Friday. We were so lucky to have beautiful weather and to have so many members of the community able to help and watch on the day. Official results from the day will be published at a later date.
Next week we are looking forward to welcoming the School Review team to the school. The review process provides the school community the opportunity to reflect on current practices and progress made towards improving the quality of teaching and learning.
Part of the review process is for the review panel to meet and connect with the school community to learn more about the school. Calwell community members are invited to meet with the review panel next Tuesday 9th May at 2:45pm. Please let me know via email Katie.Brown@ed.act.edu.au or through the front office 6142 1900 if you would like to be part of this opportunity.
Last week we welcomed the Principal of Calwell High School (Steve Collins) to the school with the school’s therapy dog (Mr Ricky). Mr Collins spoke with the 5 /6 children about the high school, the programs they offer and why they have a therapy dog. Interested families are invited to attend their Year 7 information night on Tuesday 23 May 5:30-7pm at the high school. All Year 6 families need to enrol their child for high school. ACT Public school enrolments can be made through this address Enrolling in a public school - Education (act.gov.au) If you have any questions about enrolments please don’t hesitate to contact the front office.
Next week our year 4 – 6 students will be heading off to camp. It is such an exciting opportunity for them and there is a great range of activities planned including a mud run, cooking damper and circus skills. Year 4 – 6 students who are not attending will continue with a learning program next week and should come to school as normal.
Later this term teachers will prepare midyear academic reports. These reports include a snapshot of where your child/ren are at academically and will include a short comment. I encourage you to reach out to your child/ren’s teacher (via the front office or on email) if you have any concerns about their progress and or engagement with school. Parent teacher interviews will be offered early next term after the distribution of reports.
I look forward seeing you around the school this term, and hopefully at our community conversation with the review panel next week.

It was a pleasure seeing the kindergarten children start the term with excited and positive attitudes. This week the children have worked hard on revising the numbers one to ten and practiced their counting and ordering of numbers during math rotations. The children have also been revising letter sounds and letter formations which will help them as we move into learning our golden words. This week the children had wonderful time joining in with athletics carnival running 100m, 70m races as well as learning how to do long jump and shot put.

Years One and Two continued their learning about The Past last week when some very old cars came to visit! The children were interested to the see the old cars, noticing differences such as no windows, no seatbelts, wooden interiors, cranking the engine, having to wind the window down and the size of the car. We were a bit surprised by the noise that the horns made and feel like our modern cars are quite luxurious! Thank you to the Veteran and Vintage Car Club for sharing your wonderful cars with us.

Students in 3/4 have been exploring the structure and language features associated with the narrative text type. This week our focus was around the setting and how it locates a narrative within a time and place. Students used their five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch and taste) to describe a setting. Their use of adjectives and adverbs created detailed images for the reader.

For our inquiry we have been looking at important events and people in our past. We began our unit by looking at the first fleet and colonisation. This term we have jumped forward in time and are exploring the gold rush. In the photos, students are playing a simulation game of the gold rush. They choose a character and make decisions based on historical scenarios, giving them a sense of what life was like during that era.
Walk Safely to School Day
This term we will be celebrating the Walk Safely to School Day as part of the Ride or Walk to School Safely program on Friday 19 May 2023. We will be encouraging our students to ride, walk, skate or scoot to school. It is the perfect opportunity for students and school communities across Australia to embrace active travel and healthier habits. Ride or Walk to School program reminds us to consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more riding or walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around.
This term, we will be running a ‘walking school bus’ to Calwell Primary School again. This will be held on Friday 19 May 2023. It was a great walk last term, and we are hoping to get even more students and parents involved this term. We know that walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, therefore we will meet in the car park at the bottom of Casey Cres at the start of Calwell District Playing fields next to the netball courts where it’s easy to park. Staff members will meet students from 8am and will walk together to school from there. Parents/carers are more than welcome to join us on the walk. We will start the walk at 8.15am.
We hope to see as many students, teachers and parents/carers walking to school as possible.
