Term 2 Week 10 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Calwell Community,
Where has the term gone! I know the children and staff are very much looking forward to having some down time over the upcoming school holidays. School resumes for term 3 on Monday 17 July.
I am excited to let you know that next term we are participating in a pilot project that has been established aiming to increase collaboration between the Community Service Directorate and schools. In line with this, a Child and Family Worker (Bek) will be present every Friday at Calwell Primary during Term 3. The aim is to work in a flexible and collaborative way with the school community; teachers, students and families, to further assist in positively influence the developmental pathways and life trajectory of children. It also entails assisting families to build capacity and resilience to support their children. The Tuggeranong Child and Family Centre can provide support and advice about general parenting, help coordinate services that might be involved with the family, provide strategies in dealing with challenging behaviours and case management.
The Child and Family Centre at Tuggeranong offers a wide range of services and supports in relation to parenting for children under 8 years of age. These include:
- An intake or single session advice service
- Parenting programs such as Circle of Security, Cool Little Kids and Tuning into Kids
- Case management and case coordination
- A range of targeted playgroups for children under school age
- Children’s behaviour and emotional wellbeing clinics
- Referral pathways to external services for children or parents
If you would like to make a time to meet Bek and have a chat, please contact me via email Katie.Brown@ed.act.edu.au or through the front office on 6142 1900. This is a great collaboration, and all families are welcome to access the service.
This week you will receive your child’s end of semester academic report. Kindergarten to year 6 families will receive reports via email and preschool will receive a paper copy. K-6 reports include a comment about your child’s progress in English and Maths as well as a general comment. Families are invited to sign up for a parent teacher interview next term. Information about signing up has been emailed to families.
On Friday we will farewell Dave Corcoran who has been acting Deputy Principal for the past 14 weeks. Dave will be returning to his home school (Red Hill Primary) after they generously allowed him to take the temporary position at Calwell. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave for his contribution to the team and for supporting children and families over the time he has been with us.
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable school holidays. I look forward to seeing everyone next term.

Scrivener
Since the start of school the children have counting down the days till their 100th day of kindergarten. There has been a lot of excitement building up to the big day and they are looking forward to celebrating it week 1 in term 3. This fortnight the children have been learning about 3D objects and what they look like in our everyday environment. In English the children looked closely at the story ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ and became authors and illustrators by writing and illustrating their own version of the story.
Corin
In English Year One and Two have been learning about narratives. We discussed the purpose of writing narratives and then had a go at writing our own! The students completed the writing process from start to finish - planning, drafting, editing and publishing. They enjoyed writing their stories and using word processing software and watercolours to bring them to life.
Googong
This week students in 3/4 planned and designed their own ‘Multiplication Zoo’ to include a variety of chosen animals and buildings. Students applied strategies such as repeated addition and arrays to form multiplication equations. This open-ended task provided students with the opportunity to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills for e.g. designing an enclosure suitably tall enough for a giraffe.
Bendora
Over the past couple of weeks we have been having hockey clinics once a week. Students have enjoyed learning how to dribble the ball and gain a deeper understanding of rules associated with the game. Instructors from outside the school came in to teach the clinic which was funded through a Sporting Schools Grant. Last week was our final clinic for this term.
Indo & PE
This term in PE students in K-2 have been practising their fundamental movement skills of throwing, catching, and kicking during the AFL unit. They have also been practising their bouncing skills with handballs playing foursquare/handball, as well as learning and practising hockey skills during hockey clinics. During the hockey clinics students were practising dribbling and passing in a variety of activities. Students also played different kinds of running games and relay races.
Our senior students in years 3-6 have been learning and practising AFL skills such as handballing (passing), marking, and kicking. They have been learning rules of AFL and playing a non-contact version of AFL – AFL 9s. It has been great to see students enjoying this game. Senior students have also participated in 4 sessions of hockey clinics. It’s good to see our students being exposed to a new sport (for most of them) giving it a go and enjoying the sport.
Art
During Art this term with Mrs Otero 5/6C and 5/6D have been focusing on elements of design with a focus on line, shape, form and colour. Students experimented with different materials like clay, paint, oil pastels and painted outside the classroom by making their own chalk paint. The most recent exploration of the element of line involved using carbon paper to transfer the outline of a photo/picture of the gold rush era into their own sketch artwork. They shaded the artwork to explore light and shade or coloured them in using watercolour pencils and backed it onto contrasting coloured paper.
