Term 3 Week 6 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Families,
Yesterday I visited our students who were competing at the Tuggeranong Zone Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to all of our students who competed and for representing our school so well. It was great to see all of our students being respectful and demonstrating great sportsmanship. Thanks also to Mr Susko and Miss Leanne for organising for our students to attend and for managing the team.
This week we are celebrating Book Week at Calwell. The theme for Book Week in 2023 is Read, Grow, Inspire. This is an opportunity for us to foster a love of reading with our students and to enjoy everything about books. I am enjoying visiting classes and reading some of the short listed stories. I can recommend the picture book “Lionel and Me” which is one of the shortlisted books that I read to ½ this week! All of our students are looking forward to Friday and the opportunity to dress up for the Book Week parade. The school has purchased all of the winning books so they will be available for all our students to borrow from the Library once teachers have finished using them this week.
On Wednesday and Thursday our families are invited into the hall to have the opportunity to swap a book or two. Thanks to our parent helpers who have volunteered to assist with this and for to those that have donated books for this to happen. This Book Swap will be from 8.30am.
Over the past few weeks we have been trialling some changes to the playground areas that are open at different times. Because of the congestion on the top playing field we have opened up the bottom oval to Year 3 and 4 students to play Soccer and Football. This is being run as a club so there is some extra supervision there to support positive play.
Kind Regards
Ben Roberts

This fortnight the children have been learning about measurement in maths. Both classes have been buzzing with activity as the children have been comparing classroom items to see if they are longer or shorter. In English we have been looking at different text types with a particular focus on information text and its features. The children enjoyed visit from the Chisholm fire brigade. They taught the children what to do in case of a fire and set them some homework. The children have been asked to find where their smoke detectors are and to plan a safe place to meet their family in case on an emergency.

Year One and Two have been exploring connections to places in Australia and around the world. We discussed how we felt connected to our local area and read stories and played games to explore how Indigenous Australians are connected to country. One of our favourite games to play is Gitja from the Kok-yellanji people (Northern Queensland) which is a fun cat-and-mouse style chasing game! We also made our own paper mache globes and had fun sticking the continents in the ‘right’ places. The students have enjoyed taking part in fun, hands-on experiences such as dancing from Spain, trying foods from Europe and North America and designing their own Scottish tartans!

Over the last fortnight 3/4 have taken part in enjoyable and interactive science experiments. These activities revolve around our current unit focused on identifying optimal materials/fabrics for specific environments. Throughout this science unit we've familiarised ourselves with concepts like repel, absorption and the functions of materials such as cotton, silk, and wool. In one experiment students filled two cups with water, covered one top with a tissue and one with glad wrap to explore the concepts of repelling and soaking. Another experiment had students working together to choose three materials (like jumpers, socks and foil) to warm up their cold water bottles. The group that won raised the temperature of the water in their drink bottle from 15 to 22 degrees.

We are researchers! In Geography students in 5/6 have been researching a country of their choice and creating presentations to share with their classmates. Their presentations will cover the location, history, demographics, culture and history of their country. We are looking forward to seeing their presentations.
Art
This term in music with the 3/4 classes we have been focusing on composing short musical phrases based on quality picture books and characters in stories. Each class has been playing a range of mostly percussion instruments and annotating their ideas using symbols.
5/6 have been continuing to learn about appreciating visual and media artworks and are working each week towards a combine cityscape exhibition which shows elements of our local city using a range of different art techniques and mediums.
