Term 4 Week 4 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Families,
Welcome to Week 4. We have had a busy couple of weeks with excursions, assemblies, open classrooms and stay and play. Thank you to all our families who have been able to make it into one or a few of these events. The Year 1/2 Assembly on Friday was a highlight for me. It was a full house with so many family members coming into the school to see the units learning demonstrated. Thanks to the Year 1/2 teachers for putting together such an inclusive and entertaining assembly.
ACT Public Education Awards
On Friday evening several of our staff attended the ACT Education Awards to celebrate Veronica Rapp who is one of our amazing preschool teachers. Veronica is a finalist after being nominated by the preschool team for Early Childhood Teacher of the year. This is a huge honour and well deserved by Veronica. I would again like to congratulate her on behalf of our school community. It is wonderful to see the expertise of teachers at Calwell Primary School being recognised at events like this.
Wellbeing Survey
Attached to this Newsletter is a link to an important survey for our parent community. An important aspect to our school improvement journey is ensuring that we are a happy, safe and mentally healthy community. Our staff have completed a similar survey which will help us construct our Staff Wellbeing Plan. The information you can provide in the parent survey helps us to shape our school priorities to look at ways we can build on parent engagement with the school and with learning. I would really appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey attached here. The survey is anonymous.

Class placements
It is nearly that time of year when we start to think about placing students into classes for 2024. A great deal of thought and discussion goes into this with the teachers and support staff to ensure we are providing the best opportunities for our students to be successful. We appreciate that our students and their parents also have relevant and helpful ideas about class placement. We all always try our best to facilitate this however its not always possible due to other circumstances that may not always be obvious.
Our students will have the opportunity to identify other students who may be suitable learning partners for them and we will try our best to ensure a good match. Teachers and support staff will work together later in the term to make the classes for next year.
If you have information for us to consider in your child’s class placement then please complete the attached Google Form.

Kind Regards

Preschool
Preschool have hit the ground running, starting the term delving into how our brains work and the process of learning. We are exploring how we can have a growth mindset, persist with challenges and take risks in our learning by trying new things.
We are enjoying spending time at the primary school, spontaneous picnics and visits to the playground are supporting children to build their sense of belonging and connection to big school.
The children are looking forward to next week’s Kinder orientation visit and we look forward to welcoming families in for our Kinder Info Session Tuesday 14th November 9:15am.
As the weather is warming up, please remember to bring a SunSmart hat, apply sunscreen before school and pack a full water bottle each day. We would also appreciate a spare pair of summer clothes as we are looking forward to water play experiences outdoors.

This fortnight kindergarten students have been focused on becoming writers. We have learnt that it is important for our sentences to make sense. To achieve this we have been planning out what we are going to write before we write it. We know that our sentences must start with a capital letter, we need finger spaces between our words, and we finish our sentences with a full stop.
Over the last few weeks, the kindergarten children have been learning about special places in the community and how we care for them. To help further develop their learning we spent a day at the National Zoo and Aquarium. The studentslearnt how the zoo community care for the animals and their enclosures, the zoo environment and the visitors.

1/2 have been learning about division as sharing collections of objects into equal groups. We practise our sharing with counters, unifex cubes and other small objects we could find around the classroom. Mathletics and other online maths games help us consolidate the strategies that we have learned.
Googong
Our English unit on procedures has been an exciting journey for 3/4. Recently, students had the opportunity to create adorable grass heads as a part of this learning experience. After crafting their grass heads, they practiced writing out the procedure, enhancing their communication and writing skills. Students have taken so much pride in their creations and we're so proud of their creativity and hard work.
Bendora
5/6 students participated in an online E-Safety webinar called ‘Be an eSafe kid: Protect yourself ’ last week . During this webinar they learned various ways to protect themselves whilst navigating the online world by working through various scenarios including playing online games and talking with friends online. Students discussed possible reactions and strategies to support them to be safe like speaking to trusted adults, not sharing their passwords and not speaking to strangers in online games. We hope students gained some valuable information and shared their new learning with families at home.
