From the Principal
Dear Families,
Welcome to our Week 10 Newsletter. What a busy and exciting term of learning we have had at Calwell Primary School. We are looking forward to finishing off the term in a strong way, having a restful break and returning for Term 4 on Tuesday 15th October (Monday 14th is a pupil free day).
Our annual Year 6 Market Day was held on Friday 13th and was a great success. Our students put together a fantastic array of activities, stalls and experiences for the rest of the school. Congratulations to our Year 6 students for your collaboration, professionalism and your organisation of the day. You really provided a fun and entertaining experience for everyone and helped to maintain this strong tradition for our school. Breakfast Club Volunteers Needed
Our Breakfast Club runs each Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning and is a really important part of our wellbeing and positive school culture. Thanks to our regular volunteers who are here every week to run breakfast club. We really appreciate your efforts in providing this service for our students. We really need some more volunteers to help with this. Volunteering for breakfast club includes cooking toast, serving and tiding up. Time commitment is from 8:30-9:00 and you are welcome to come as a one off or on a regular basis. Please see the front office if you are able to volunteer some time to help with Breakfast Club in Term 4.
Staffing update
This week we say goodbye to Jaida who has been working with us over the last 2 terms as a Learning Support Assistant. Jaida has been playing footy with the Canberra Raiders. She has been a really positive role model for our students and has quickly developed strong relationships. Jaida is returning to Queensland and we hope she will be back to work with us again next year. Thanks Jaida, for your great work here at Calwell.
Kind Regards
Ben Roberts

In kindergarten for Geography we have been learning all about special places and how we care for them. To help with this learning we headed out to the Arboretum where we learnt about some of the ways the Ngunnawal people care for their Country, and how they use natural resources for everyday uses. The students had a go at brushing their teeth with a leaf and learnt about local trees that can be used as medicine. We loved learning how to throw a boomerang, and despite the wind, everyone had a great time. While we were there students mastered climbing to the top of the Pod playground to go down the big slide. It was a fabulous day with lots of wonderful hands-on learning opportunities. Some of the highlights were catching the bus, wearing a kangaroo skin, throwing a boomerang and running down the big hill.
In Mathematics students have been learning about measurement. Over the past few weeks we have learnt how to measure and compare length, mass, capacity and we are currently learning about duration. They have enjoyed exploring this unit as they have been able to physically engage with the learning. Students enjoyed practising hefting by comparing different objects in the classroom and getting out into the sandpit to help them understand capacity.
Kindergarten are enjoying our Initialit program, and amaze themselves every day with what they can read and write. We are currently learning about digraphs and vowels. The students were amazed to learn that every word we read and write has a vowel in it. They are finding their tricky words throughout the classrooms and when reading quality texts at home or in the library.
Kindergarten would also like to Thank the year six students for their hard work on market day. They had an amazing time!
